AU Special Envoy and ODM leader Raila Odinga was airlifted out of the country to recover from a mild nerve disorder away from the interruption of family and guests. Speaking for the first time about her husband’s health condition, Ida Odinga revealed that the decision was undertaken following the advice of a doctor who said his stay at home would jeopardize the recovery.
“Had he been here, many people would be flocking the home to see him. Each visitor always wants to talk to him thus eating away into his recovery time, ” she said.
While dismissing reports that the opposition leader was critically ill, Ida confirmed that he had successfully undergone treatment for a mild nerve disorder that affects the leg and would soon be fine.
“Treat such rumours with utmost contempt and abhorrence. It is not right to speculate on someone’s health,” said Ida as was quoted by The Standard.
Ida who revealed that she stayed in contact with her husband on an hourly basis, also said that they would charter a plane to return Raila home when the right time came.
“You know that currently there are no commercial flights. This means that if he is coming back, we have to charter a plane, but that process will be kicked off once he fully recovers,” she added.
Ida’s revelation ends sustained speculations that the veteran politician was critically ill and was flown to China to receive special medical attention. Several leaders including Raila’s elder brother Oburu Odinga and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho have also dismissed the rumours.
