Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is in the spotlight after Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) accused her of nepotism, conflict of interest, and irregular recruitment.
In a letter dated October 19, the EACC cites the governor for hiring her sisters as her aides and her husband Murega Baicu as the county youth patron and hustlers’ ambassador.
“It is reported that you have employed two of your sisters to public office, one as your personal assistant and another as security personnel,” EACC says in the letter.
EACC also cited her for directing county staff to work for Baite TV, which she owned
Ms Kawira is also alleged to have directed county workers to use their social media pages to promote her political activities.
The letter also raises questions about hiring acting county communication director Hillary Mutuma and cleaners without following public service recruitment regulations. Mr. Mutuma is also the county government spokesperson.
The county chief faces harsh rebellion from the MCAs who accused her of dictatorship and disrespect.
But the defiant governor has vowed to stay put despite the rebellion and intimidation.
She has since removed nearly all MCAs from the county assembly WhatsApp group.
