A high-level climate conference organized by the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) has brought together policymakers, climate experts, and development partners to address Africa’s climate finance and agricultural resilience.
The event, held in collaboration with AUDA-NEPAD, the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, and international organizations, focuses on mobilizing resources to enhance climate action in agriculture.
Speaking at the opening session, Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno, Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, emphasized the urgency of climate resilience strategies, calling for stronger investment in sustainable agriculture. Other key speakers included Dr. George Wamukoya (AGNES Team Lead), Marlene Achoki (CARE), Liva Kaugure (FAO), and Prof. Appolinaire Djikeng (ILRI).
The discussions centered on Africa’s climate priorities for 2025, with an emphasis on financing mechanisms, adaptation measures, and integrating agriculture into climate policies. Experts highlighted the role of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) 3.0, LT-LEDS, and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) in strengthening climate resilience. Pedro Chilambe led a session on mobilizing resources for climate action in agriculture and food security, stressing the need for increased investments.
Another panel, featuring Patrick Kibaya, Bernard Kimoro, and Berhanu Assefa, unpacked policies for climate finance, aiming to accelerate project development and implementation.
As discussions continue, AGNES and its partners are working to align climate finance strategies with Africa’s development agenda. The outcomes of this conference are expected to shape policy recommendations for COP30 and strengthen Africa’s position in global climate negotiations
