Brian Olunga, the late aide of politician Brian Khaemba who was allegedly shot dead by Kimilili MP Didimus Barasa, was laid to rest on Saturday 20th August 2022 in Samitsi, Malava, Kakamega County.
Family and friends who attended Brian’s funeral service eulogized him as a dedicated and hardworking person and called on leaders to ensure justice for the family is obtained.
Mr. Tobias Olunga, Brian’s father, said proper action should be taken against Didmus Baraza, adding that his son’s life was taken while he was still very young.
“I am hoping the police will carry out a thorough job and present to the court a tight case that will bring the killer of my son to book. It pains me to see such a young soul go like that,” he said.
Brian friends remembered him as a peaceful person who would always protect those who were close to him, they also said that justice should prevail and the culprit brought to book.
Brian Khaemba was shot dead by Kimili Mp-elect Didmus Baraza on Tuesday, 9th August in the company of Brian Khaemba to Chebukwabi polling station at around 6 pm to observe the tallying of votes.
According to the police report, Didmus Baraza ran into his opponent Brian Khaemba who was seeking to unseat the incumbent from the Kimilili MP seat on Democratic Action Party (DAP-K)
He met Didmus at the polling station and decided to leave a few minutes after arriving at the polling station.
According to the reports received by wembe.co.ke, Mr. Khaemba while on his way to his car “Didmus Barasa followed him in the company of four men and ordered them not to allow him (Mr. Brian Khaemba) to leave…”
Khaembas’s driver Joshua Naskho defied Didmus orders and ignited the car.
“Didmus Barasa withdrew a pistol and aimed at Mr. Khaemba’s aide namely Brian Olunga and shot him on the forehead where he profusely bled,” the police report reads.
Brian succumbed to the gunshot after he was rushed to Kimilili Sub County Hospital as Didmus Baraza escaped to Uganda for two days and later surrendered himself to Bungoma Police Police
Didmus Baraza who was re-elected as the Kimilili Member Of parliament distanced himself from he intentionally shot and killed Brain Olunga.
Mr. Barasa was on Monday 15th August arraigned at the Bungoma Law Courts in an online hearing to face charges of murder.
The ODPP said it had asked for more time during the court hearing to allow for more witnesses including officers from the National Youth Service and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to record statements.
“Prosecution asked for more time to allow more witnesses, including NYS & IEBC officials who were present at Chebukwabi Polling Station, to record statements,” ODPP said.
The prosecution at the same time requested that the legislature remains in custody to allow it to engage the Witness Protection Agency (WPA) to protect witnesses “who expressed fear to testify.”
“The detectives also need time to complete & present ballistic and postmortem reports,” they added.
