Former Kilifi Governor Amason Jaffer Kingi has been elected as the Speaker of the Senate after he garnered 46 votes in an exercise conducted a few minutes after the Azimio la Umoja allied Senators walked out.
They walked out of the Senate in the process just moments after the clerk, Jeremiah Nyengenye announced that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka had withdrawn from the speaker’s race.
Narok Senator, Ledama Ole Kina, and Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka were the first leaders to walk out in protest,
A few minutes then Amason Kingi was sworn in as the Speaker Of the Senate.
Homabay Senator Moses Kajwang said they decided not to vote after raising the integrity issues of some of the candidates who were also in the race.
“Nominated senators were only gazetted late yesterday hence disenfranchising them yet they are also qualified to vie,” Kajwang said.
