Former Nyatike Member of Parliament Edith Anyanga has been arrested over shooting one of his opponent’s supporters on 24th July in Migori County.
Anyanga who is defending his seat in the coming general elections is accused of shooting 35-year-old Justus Ochieng on Saturday, July 22, 2022, after leaving a local club at Lwanda Konyango at around midday.
“Edick Omondi Anyanga has been arrested and is to be arraigned before Migori law court tomorrow 27/07/2022 to be charged with the offense of attempted murder contrary to section 220 of the penal code,” the police report reads.
According to the police report seen by https://wembe.co.ke/, the former legislature and his security team in his vehicle confronted Justus and his friend Calvin Omondi accusing them of supporting his opponents, and a few minutes later Anyanga drew out his gun and shot Justus in the thigh.
“MP candidate Nyatike constituency Edick Anyanga Omondi and his personnel who started threatening Justus Ochieng while inside the vehicle claiming that he has been going against his political ambitions and in the process Omondi discharged his firearm shooting Justus on his right side of the hips and sustained injuries,” the report reads.
He was arrested after a protest by Tom Odege and his supporters who complained that the suspect was still at large three days after committing the crime.
Odege while addressing the media said that after shooting Justus, Anyanga went ahead and stepped on him frustrating the effort to take him to the hospital.
“He thought the boy was dead as he was guarding his body frustrating the efforts by people to take him to the hospital. He had to stay at the scene for two hours before he was rushed to the hospital,” he said.
Justus was later taken to Sori Lakeside Hospital where he is currently admitted and in a stable condition.
Edith Anyanga’s pistol SIG SAUVER 2022 SERIAL NUMBER SP2022 and a magazine of 12 live ammunition caliber 9mm were kept being used as a shred of evidence.
On his part, Anyanga said that the victim and his people had planned to finish and that is when he shot him to protect himself.
“They tried opening the door and I came out and I shot to scare them because this is my life. They ran and another gunshot from nowhere was heard and that is when we escaped. I made one gunshot but in this case, there were two. This means the people had rungus, pangas, and guns,” he said.
