Former Sol Generation Signee Crystal Asige has officially been gazetted as a senator- representing persons living with disabilities under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
In a gazette notice issued by IEBC on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, Asige’s name features on the list of legislators who have been nominated to join the National Assembly and the Senate.
Earlier this year the singer was nominated by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Her nomination was dependent on a number of factors including how many seats ODM would clinch. Today however she has all the reasons to smile as she has been gazetted as a new senator set to represent people with disabilities under the ODM party.
She is also set to add on the female numbers in the parliament which is also one of the reasons why IEBC allows parties to submit names for consideration. It is a requirement in Kenya for a 2/3 gender rule and one of the ways to achieve this is by prioritizing women during nominations.
On July 28, Asige sent a message of appreciation to ODM Party leader Raila Odinga for nominating her to the Senate.
“This week Hon. Raila Odinga chose to leave no Kenyan behind – no matter their ability or disability. I consider this Senate nomination by Baba and ODM to be an honor and count this as a win for the communities I represent. A win for Persons with Disabilities, a win for women, and a win for the youth in Kenya,” Crystal wrote.
