Embattled Football Federation Of Kenya (FKF) President Nicholas Mwendwa has announced his return after 10 months in the cold owing to several court cases after Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed accused his office of alleged misappropriation of funds.
In a letter seen by Wembe.co.ke Nick said that all the charges against him had been dropped and he was back in office as FKF President.
“Following the withdrawal of charges by the Directorate of Public Prosecution on July 8, 2022. I hereby wish to inform your good office that I have resumed my duties as the FKF president with immediate effect,” the letter addressed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
The embattled FKF President has been out of office since November 2021 when he delegated his duties to FKF vice president Doris Petra, as he faced graft charges.
His decision to step aside to allow the conclusion of investigations came after he lost his bid to stop his prosecution in an Sh38 million graft case.
In a letter to the National Executive Committee Mwenda said, “In light of the foregoing, specifically, the frequent arrests and detentions, which have adversely affected my family and personal business and whilst I am confident I will be cleared of any wrongdoing, in the end, I have today in accordance with Article 42(8) of the FKF constitution (2017)asked my Vice President Madam Doris Petra to assume all functions of the FKF president.”
“Taking into consideration that I am personally being targeted in all this, my decision has been arrived at with the federation’s best interest at heart,” he added.
However, Nick was later arrested and charged before he was granted an Sh4 million bail. The ODPP also dropped the charges against Mwendwa.
In July 2022, Mwendwa was rearrested and fresh charges were preferred against him.
