The family of Amelia Jacobeth Liabule who emerged top prison Kenya Certificate Primary Education (KCPE) candidate in the country has revealed that she is a graduate of Egerton University.
According to The Standard Newspaper, At the time she was arrested and charged with murder of her mother , she had enrolled for a Master’s Degree.
On Wednesday Match, 30, the Standard team managed to visit her rural Shishendu village in Ikolomani sub-county where it was revealed that the suspect was indeed a student at the Egerton University in 2009.
Dr. Jwani Julius, Principle Secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education said he would need to read the story first, understand it and consult the Ministry’s legal officer before committing on how to deal with the inmate.
Reports also reveals that the student’s industrial attachment logbook shows that Liabule pursued an Environment Science degree at the University.
According to the attachment logbook, her admission number was N12/50100/09. Her photos in a school uniform at Ere Girls High School where she was a student also emerged.
Liabule who got 402 marks in KCPE had earlier lied that she is a Form Three dropout from Eregi girls High School.
According to Liabule’s sister ,Tabitha Indoshi, Liabule graduated with an undergraduate degree in Environment Science from Egerton University in 2013.
“It hit me so hard that she was saying she is a Form Three dropout , that was so unfortunate,” Says Tabitha who is her elder sister.
Indoshi said that she never attended the graduation but most of her family members attended but Liabule was done with the first degree and enrolled for a second at Kenyatta University.
Doreen Anabaka, The Kakamega Women’s prison in-charge says she was also taken aback by the revelation that Liabule was persuing a Masters degree.
She said that many inmates give scanty information about their education and age.
“Ours is not to investigate but just to keep the inmates in a good environment , rectify their behaviour and produce them in court.” She says.
