In a significant move to promote e-mobility in Kenya, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced the introduction of green number plates specifically for electric vehicles and motorcycles.
Speaking during the launch of the e-mobility policy at KICC on Wednesday, March 27, Murkomen announced that the number plates will be issued to Kenyans who also own electric motorcycles.
“All vehicles that are EVs will be given green number plates. Those that have been having the green one need to apply for another one
“We are doing this to encourage them (owners of EVs). We will also have incentives. We will talk to governors to give priority to parking spaces for electric vehicles which will be cheaper” he said.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly transportation options.
The distinctive green plates will make electric vehicles and motorcycles easily identifiable, streamlining their recognition on the roads.
This policy aligns with global trends towards sustainable transport solutions and reflects Kenya’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
The introduction of these plates is expected to come with additional incentives, such as preferential parking spaces and reduced rates, further motivating the public to transition to electric mobility. With nearly 3,000 registered electric vehicles in the country, this move by CS Murkomen could significantly boost the numbers, contributing to a cleaner and greener future for Kenya.
